    Verify separate uplink/downlink coverage, handedness, axial ratio and antenna orientation.

  • Coverage versus gain · dBi / degrees

    Examine full-sphere radiation patterns, spacecraft blockage and edge-of-coverage gain rather than peak gain alone.

  • RF matching and isolation

    Check return loss/VSWR, cable loss, duplexer requirements and transmit-to-receive coupling.

  • Delivered electronics

    Separate passive antenna from an integrated PA/LNA/filter module; mass and DC power depend on this boundary.

  • Mounting and accommodation · mm / g

    Include connector height, ground-plane requirements, thermal finish and keep-out zones.

  • Deployment reliability

    For deployables, assess redundancy, release power, deployed length, inhibit logic and confirmation sensing.

  • RF power handling · W

    Check average/peak transmit power, duty cycle and thermal/vacuum qualification.

  • Environment and acceptance

    Compare qualification versus operational limits, materials/outgassing, vibration and unit acceptance evidence.

Selection & integration notes
  • A mission may need multiple antennas for different spacecraft attitudes; no single patch should be assumed to provide unobstructed all-sky coverage.
  • Commercial, ISM and licensed-space S-band variants cover different frequencies; physical resemblance does not make them interchangeable.
  • A high-gain data-downlink antenna and a broad-coverage command antenna serve different jobs.
  • For passive hardware, zero electrical consumption does not mean zero system power: the connected radio/amplifier remains a separate budget.
