C02Star trackers

Determine orientation from the stars.

Manufacturers & products

Star trackers estimate orientation from star fields. Some are self-contained attitude sensors; others require a separate electronics unit or spacecraft computer to process optical-head data.

These are sourcing candidates, not a confirmed Starlink supply chain.

What remains unverified

  • AAC ST400 page gives inconsistent supply ranges; numerical examples omit voltage.
  • Some new CubeSpace specification sheets label star-tracker values preliminary; obtain the selected flight revision.
  • Leonardo A-STR public brief is older; ask for the current configuration and availability.

Where it comes from

A company address is shown separately from a published factory location. Request the manufacturing site and lot traceability for the exact part when sourcing.

What to compare

  • Attitude knowledge · arcsec; σ

Keep cross-boresight and roll/about-boresight accuracy separate, including the stated confidence level.

  • Field of view and exclusion · °

Account for baffle geometry and exclusion angles to Sun, Earth and Moon in actual mounting geometry.

  • Tracking and acquisition rates · °/s

Check both tracking and lost-in-space acquisition at the expected spacecraft angular rate.

  • Update rate and latency · Hz; ms

Compare output cadence, timestamp accuracy and latency under the intended tracking mode.

  • Power, mass and envelope · W; g; mm

Include baffle, electronics and thermal hardware; an optical head is not a complete standalone tracker.

  • Processing architecture

Confirm onboard solution versus external OBC software, interfaces, CPU load and software licensing.

  • Alignment and thermal stability

Request calibration and thermoelastic alignment error budgets, not only laboratory centroid precision.

  • Robustness and lifetime

Assess blinding recovery, radiation effects, mission-level heritage and unit qualification.

Selection & integration notes
  • Do not compare a 1σ specification directly with a 3σ number.
  • A tracker model needs an unobstructed optical field and an alignment/calibration plan.
