B03Power conditioning & distribution

Condition power and route it to spacecraft loads.

Manufacturers & products

The PCDU or EPS manages array power, battery charging and protected power distribution. Some products provide all three functions; a PDU alone only distributes power. The choices span CubeSat boards to custom kilowatt-class systems.

These are sourcing candidates, not a confirmed Starlink supply chain.

What remains unverified

  • Current unit-level radiation reports, derating, full efficiency curves and fault responses are usually not public.
  • No PCDU supplier is asserted to be on the actual SpaceX V2 Mini bill of materials.

Where it comes from

A company address is shown separately from a published factory location. Request the manufacturing site and lot traceability for the exact part when sourcing.

What to compare

  • Architecture and scope

Identify array regulation, battery charging, power distribution and fault protection actually included.

  • Array input window · V, A, W

Check cold open-circuit voltage, hot operating voltage and per-channel power/current limits.

  • Bus regulation · V

Choose regulated or battery-following buses and verify every load over the full voltage range.

  • Continuous and peak power · W

Use stated thermal conditions and simultaneous-channel limits; input power is not necessarily output power.

  • Efficiency at load · %

Compare loss curves over operating loads and temperatures, not only peak efficiency.

  • Protected output channels · channels, A

Check LCL behavior, inrush/slew control, reset policy and critical always-on loads.

  • Battery compatibility

Verify chemistry, string voltage, balancing ownership, heater control and charge management.

  • Redundancy and radiation

Review fault containment, safe mode, SEE behavior and shielding assumptions behind the dose rating.

  • Interfaces and packaging · kg, mm

Confirm command/telemetry protocol, connector allocation, thermal mounting and total subsystem mass.

Selection & integration notes
  • The battery charger, PCDU and propulsion PPU perform different jobs. Draw them as separate functional nodes even when one supplier integrates them.
  • Start a large communications bus trade with the required average and peak payload/propulsion loads; a small CubeSat EPS is a useful educational reference but may be far below that scale.
  • A high solar input rating does not establish battery discharge or protected-output capability.
